  • Books and Wings: Books and Wings is an IRS approved 501(c)3 non-profit, whose mission is to support community libraries and education in Guatemala.  Books and Wings works in several under-served communities in the Departments of Esquintla and Suchitepequez; including Tiquisate, Rio Bravo, and Chicacao.  Books and Wings serves rural schools in the Esquintla area through loans of mini-libraries, librarian visits and teacher training.  Most Guatemalan families struggle to afford the cost of registration fees, school uniforms, books and school supplies. Because of this, only small percentages of children are able to study in Basico (Jr HS), and even fewer make it to Diversificado (High School). The Books and Wings scholarship program addresses this problem, as well as encouraging strong study habits and community service.
  • Common Hope: The heart of Common Hope’s work in Guatemala is education. We provide the necessary resources for over 2,700 children to attend school each year in seventeen villages outside of Antigua and Guatemala City.  We understand that education is about more than books and uniforms – a comprehensive approach is critical to help students and their families to reach their full potential. For this reason we also focus our efforts on health care, housing, and family development.
  • Grupo Cajola describes itself as "We are a group of Guatemalans and friends of Guatemalans, mostly from the town of Cajolá in the department of Quetzaltenango in Guatemala, and most of us are Maya Mam. (The Mam people are one of the four largest groups of Maya people now living in Guatemala.) Many of us have had to migrate to the United States out of necessity -- to earn money for food,  medical care, school, or housing for our families. Nearly 94% of Cajolá is poor, and nearly 40% of us live in the United States. We have organized ourselves to watch out for each other, especially during hard times, such as when someone dies, or gets sick. Some of us have returned to Guatemala, to Cajolá, and we are working there to organize the community to develop opportunities for a better life so that no one has to leave his family and community behind in order to survive."  Local members of Gruo Cajola have given presentations as well as cooking and marimba demonstrations at recent GAFE events.
  • Hands of Hope: (Manos de Esperanza in Spanish) started out in 1998, operating a mobile medical clinic to the rural poor in Guatemala. They converted a small school bus into a fully-equipped doctor's office, so medical care and medicines could be brought where they are most needed.
  • Heifer International: A non-profit organization whose goal is to help end world hunger and poverty through self-reliance and sustainability.
  • Orphan Resources: Aids children, who through no fault of their own, have found themselves orphaned and alone.Orphan Resources provides spiritual, vocational and personal development training to the children, as well as take food, clothing, toys and work crews into orphanages to do construction and remodeling.
  • Safe Passage: Opened its doors in 1999 to provide hope and assistance to the children of the Guatemala City garbage dump. Safe Passage believes every child should have the opportunity to receive an education and go as far as they are able in school. The programs help each child gain skills needed to obtain stable jobs, to be self-sufficient and lead their families out of poverty in a dignified and permanent way.
  • Transitions Foundation: Committed to making a difference to people by bringing dignity via healthcare, training, vocational and higher-level education to disabled people of Guatemala.
